Three ways to get UK company accounts data

Most UK companies file their annual accounts at Companies House as iXBRL: a web page with every figure tagged so a computer can read it. Convert-IXBRL reads those filings and turns them into tables you can search, filter and download.

Search portal

Find companies in your browser, no code needed.

  • Search by name, town, city or postcode (with a distance in miles), industry (SIC code), status and incorporation date
  • Filter on filed figures such as turnover, profit or loss, net assets, cash at bank and number of employees
  • Open a company's profile, officers, persons with significant control and financial statements
  • Download results as Excel or JSON

REST API

Build company data into your own software.

  • Company profiles, officers, persons with significant control and financial statements across reporting periods
  • Find companies with the same filters as the portal, including financial figures
  • JSON responses, with CSV and Excel also offered
  • A free test key to build and try your integration

Free company rankings and statistics

Public pages built from the same filed accounts, free and with no registration. Each one explains how it was made, states its limits and has a CSV download.

Where the data comes from

Every financial figure is taken from the annual accounts companies file at Companies House, the UK's official register of companies. Basic company details, such as name, registered office, status, SIC codes and filing due dates, come from the Companies House register.

Financial data covers companies that file their accounts in digital iXBRL or XBRL form, which is about 80% of filings. Companies that file only paper or PDF accounts have their basic details but not their figures. Small companies may leave some figures, such as turnover, out of the accounts they file, so a figure can be missing because it was never filed.

The data is updated every night. More on coverage is on the About page.

Questions

What is iXBRL?

Inline XBRL (iXBRL) is the format most UK companies use to file their accounts. It looks like a normal document, but each figure, such as turnover or net assets, carries a tag that says what it is. That is what lets the figures be read automatically and put into a spreadsheet.

Can I download company accounts as Excel?

Yes. Search for a company or a list of companies in the portal and download the results or a company's financial statements as Excel or JSON. The API and bulk files give the same data for larger volumes.

Do I need to register?

No registration is needed to open the search portal or to read the rankings and statistics. The API uses a key, and a free test key is available. See pricing for plans.

Which companies are covered?

Basic details cover every company on the Companies House register. Financial figures cover over 3.5 million companies that file accounts in iXBRL or XBRL form.
